K-State Slate: 2.7.12

K-State Basketball

K-State gets a home game against Texas Tech, who is winless in Big 12 conference play this season. After this, the Wildcats face a murderous stretch that includes games at Texas, KU at home, at Baylor and at Missouri.

With Will Spradling breaking out of his slump, Angel Rogriguez finding his confidence, and Rodney McGruder getting healthy K-State should have three guards ready to go against Tech tonight.

SB Nation's Bracketology has K-State in the field and seeded eighth. We'll take an NCAA Tournament appearance any way we can get it at this point, but Notre Dame in the first round followed by Kentucky in the Round of 32? Yikes.

Big 12 Basketball

Missouri got a 71-68 win in Norman after Steven Pledger missed a three pointer that would have tied the game at the buzzer ... Texas won the final Lone Star Showdown when it picked up a 70-68 win over Texas A&M in College Station.

Speaking of Texas and basketball, Peter Bean has an excellent article for Basketball Prospectus looking at the Big 12 race as it enters the final stretch.

Big 12 Football

West Virginia is buying out of its game against Florida State this September. Yet another sign that the Mountaineers have every intention of being in the Big 12 for the 2012-13 season.

Sorry...

I just don’t see McGruder playing much tonight. We should be able to beat T-Tech w/out him. We need him for the stretch and feet heal pretty quickly if you don’t use them.

I wouldn't mind seeing 10 minutes out of Rod, but I agree, let him rest.

I’d take the non-possessed Will, Angel, Martavious, Shane, and Jeremy (if he ever sees the court again) over anything TT can throw at the Cats.

I would be fine if Rodney sat out tonight or got limited playing time
Especially since we will need him against Texas

Unless the the spirit of Denis Clemente possesses Angel and rips the horns with 44 again.

If you squint when you watch angel

He looks exactly like denis

That's what I'm worried about concerning seeding in the tourney right now

If we finish ok we probably get in, but at an 8 or 9 puts you behind the eight ball playing the number 1 seed if you win. I won’t complain because getting in will be a success this year but I’d love to see us finish 11-7 and rise to about a 5 or 6 seed. Even the 10, 7 line is better.

I'm with you

we need to at least get in to get the extra tourney/game experience for the Freshman. NIT games just aren’t the same since you play on home courts for most games.

And…I don’t want to listen to the Beakers if we miss out.

From TWWL

an Updated Too-Early Top 25.

The Cats are unmoved at #12. I have to say, if this team starts the season at 12, I would be ecstatic. To finish that high or higher is not unrealistic, but I would also be ecstatic for that occurrence.

Kinda scary considering we usually fall from high expectations and rise from low

I’d rather having them pegging us out of the top 25. Although I think of any team, this one will have the talent to back it up.

Agreed

And I think the returning leaders (esp. Klein and Brown) will keep them focused.

The thing that worries me

is that I think the schedule will be that much tougher with TCU and West Virginia replacing A&M and Mizzou. Texas and OU will be tough as always, and toss in Miami in their second year of Al Golden’s reign and that is a damn tough schedule – and we haven’t even gotten to TTU which brings back the most starters of anyone in the Big-12. I’m not discounting that we might have a better team than last year, just that we might not have the same win total at the end of the season. We need the defense to take another big step forward from last year in order to ensure some of those close wins in ’11 remain wins in ’12. Counting on that to happen makes me nervous.

Also agreed

that’s why I said I would be ecstatic if we finished at or around 12. I would gladly take a Top-25 finish next year, even if it was lower than last year.

Too high for my tastes, but I love the publicity.

I’d like 15 to 25 myself. I’m not worried about the offense (but another RB would be nice), but I still can’t trust the D. We really need Little Lockett to come back 100%.

Wouldn't it be nice if when Bryce Brown isn't drafted,

he has an epiphany, comes back and works his ass off to be Hubert’s back up. The way it sounds is that Demarcus Robinson is working harder and he really has the skills to be very good also though.

He can't.

Once you’ve declared—and not pulled out before the deadline—you can’t go back to play in college, if I remember correctly.

Sucks for him then...what a waste of talent
I also believe this to be the case

once the paperwork is filed and the deadline passed, youre stuck with it

Or, as soon as you hire an agent.

Not sure if he has hired n agent, though.

Why bother? He had that Butler character from Wichita to take care of all of that for him.
For the last time we don't need BB, we don't want BB. the BB ship has sailed...

put it to bed.

He had a golden opportunity and for some reason...

personal or otherwise squandered it. Would it have been nice to see what he could do, absolutely. But from everything that I have heard true or not it was best he left the way he did.

I don't know that I would say that it is the best he could have left

Certainly he could have left much worse, but he also could have left in a much better way.

That being said, the kid had talent, and it would have been nice if he could have bought into our system, but no use crying over spilled milk, right? (this is the part we are in agreement on)

I'm manly enough to admit this

I giggled when I saw this…

O.M.G. YES

sorry it’s so dark…

this is... AWESOME
It's probably something a fan made up

but I want it so, so, so, so bad

This is just sexy
Umm... Are there matching jersey's to this scheme?
Didn't see them

saw this posted on twitter, and I felt it needed to be shared

you felt correctly. :)
^This

But make the helmet white and the powercat purple.

The powercat is purple in that image.

And the helmet matches our current ones, though you are correct in asserting it is not white.

The darkness is just because of the shadows.

From what I can tell

its purple powercat on dark grey. I think it looks pretty sweet though.

I think what Catbacker is trying to say is

that the helmet SHOULD be white.

I’ve voiced this opinion multiple times, and I’ll say it again. I think a solid white helmet (no stripe down the middle) with the Powercat the same purple as our jerseys would look hella sweet.

Yes, I realize that is essentially the helmet that Texas wears, but I still think it would be cool.

I like this new design with the larger Powercat that kind of envelopes the helmet (like it a lot actually), but unless you are intimately familiar with the Powercat, it IS a bit harder to recognize.

Right.

He was saying the Powercat should be purple, but it already is.

He was saying the helmet should be white, and it is is not.

Therefore, he was right in asserting that the helmet was not white, but incorrect in asserting the Powercat was purple.

At least, that is how I read it.

I was thinking along Jeremy's lines...

In I want to see a white helmet with the purple powercat. This scheme is not unlike what Boise State showed in a few games last season.

YES!

White helmet with purple Powercat in this design would be super sweet!

I would actually prefer

to keep the helmet silver, just remove the stripe and increase the size of the powercat.

My ideal helmet would be the design above, with base silver, and on both sides so that the powercat would grow from the back forward the envelop both sides of the head.

yes, that would be cool as well

and I’m not suggesting the white helmet would be our ONLY helmet. This goes back to the conversation about having that special uni that you bust out on rare occasions for special circumstances.

I am pretty certain that I NEVER want to see our football team wear white pants though.

Agreed

and agreed. white pants are pretentious (Texas and OU say HAI!)

not only that, they don't "cover" well.

There are few things I dislike more than seeing a guy’s jock strap through his football pants.

White helmet, white jersey, silver pants.

Unfurl it on KU at the Bill.

Good grief ...

F* you, Jason King.

Sure, now that your beloved jaybags finally get the bad end of some BigXII officiating, it’s time to say something. F*ing pathetic.

Two things:

1) The whole “King’s Court” thing (complete with a “Questions for the King” section) accentuates the d-baggery of King.

2) He’s not wrong. Officiating at the higher levels (both NBA and NCAA D-1) is incredibly inconsistent, and often just straight up terrible.

I know he's not wrong ... that's why it's so pathetic.

He just never said “boo” until his team finally … finally … got shafted (a little) on the road.

I agree with your post here,

except the parenthetical. They got shafted quite a lot at the end of that game.

That's cool. It's pretty run-of-the-mill for the rest of the BigXII road teams.

I watched and thought “Wow, they actually got treated like everyone else for once.”

Of course, it took the Mother Of All Home Games and a green officiating crew to get that done, but it was done. :-)

I think what bothered me about the call(s)--other than Missouri winning as a tangential result of it--

was the fact that both offensive foul calls looked a lot like showboat officiating, which I despise.

and the showboating

is what was mentioned in the Grantland article about this. And yeah, the officials are not who people go to games to see. I don’t know officials’ names, nor do I want to. Dude makes a comparison to Leslie Nielsen in Naked Gun when he is umpiring that baseball game, and his strike calls turned into elaborate 30 second dances. Just ridiculous.

I also thought it was a bit of a joke that, despite the numerous examples noted in King’s “article”, nothing was actually mentioned about it in a public forum until it happened to KU.

KU does not foul.
see Cole Aldrich
Especially when he gets four...the fifth just never develops.

Elusive as Atlantis, Bigfoot and The Bermuda Triangle.

I tested this on two occasions.

One was a KSU game, and one was against UT. In both, Aldrich had four fouls, and committed eleven blatant fouls (after picking up his fourth) in the two games combined, but fouled out of neither game.

I still remember the first time he fouled out

it was on a technical on the road (UT I think), then a few games later came into Bramlage and actually got the fifth on a regular call.

That “Right-Left” chant was soooooooo sweet

just checked, it was a tourney game

that we lost. but the band still chanted……

To be fair

he does mention the KSU-ISU game when Rodney got hacked and there was no call

Again ... he doesn't make a big issue out of officiating until his team gets it.

Now it’s officially a plague, in his world.

Also true

It was definitely some biased writing…to put it mildly

yes, he DOES mention KSU/ISU

along with several other great examples (dating back to Jan 23), but he didn’t feel it was disgusting enough to write about until it happened to KU. At least, that’s certainly the way it appears anyway.

I actually appreciate the article

Yea it’s douchy to only mention when KU gets screwed once in a million bad calls, but ours being mentioned is good. If only selection committees were knowledgable enough to keep this information in mind in a month. We should be big 12 #4.

"We should be big 12 #4" That isn't the fault of the referees.
K-State team report

http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/news?slug=teamreports-2012-ncaab-kab – Must win at UT. Must win at UT. Must win at UT. Actually, must win next 3 games. No pressure guys.

Only game I'll see in person this year is at UT.

Can’t decide on which tickets to purchase right now. I’ll probably wait too long and have nose bleed seats.
