K-State Basketball
Shane Southwell hasn't had the breakout season we had been hoping to see, struggling to adjust to what was supposed to be an increased role this year.
Once again, Peter has an excellent preview of this Saturday's K-State/Texas showdown.
Frank Martin sent a letter to K-State students yesterday, acknowledging that he needs to cut down on the profanity on the sidelines, and asking that they do the same in the stands. After attending four games this season, I can honestly say I had no idea what this letter was referencing until I asked some people.
Big 12 Conference
It sounds like West Virginia and the Big East have reached a settlement. West Virginia will pay $11 million to the conference, while the Big 12 will kick in the other $9 million, probably to be paid out of Texas A&M's and Missouri's liquidated damages. Meanwhile, the Big 12 will release its 2012 football schedule today.
College Football Playoff
Dr. Saturday has a few suggestions for the proposed four-team college-football playoff.

Out of curiosity...
In your informed opinion, which is more likely?
RPT - February 10, 2012
Good question
I’m not sure I have an informed opinion and I don’t really mind the profanity myself.
If I had to make a guess I’d say that Frank would be the more likely of the two to cut it out. I may be speaking as a minority here though.
BeYard2 - February 10, 2012
I agree with you here...
mainly because with Frank we are talking about one person as opposed to hundreds or a thousand.

The earth will crash into the sun before either stops
TB - February 10, 2012
Actually, both would stop before the earth crashed into the sun.
Because before we reached the surface of the sun, the atmosphere would be burned off and all life on earth would cease, thus stopping any form of cussing.

Sounds like you've been watching a lot of History Channel
and their “end of Days” type shows.
But you are totally correct. :)
Jeremy Sharp - February 10, 2012
Elementary, my dear Sharp.
Just an overactive imagination.
Though I do like making fun of the History Channel:

I LOVE this guy!
He’s funny.
Jeremy Sharp - February 10, 2012
Such terrible hair

But he intentionally wears it like that
which is why it is so funny.

The History Channel really is the shittiest aspect of American culture, isn't it?
There is rarely anything that a halfway competent high school history teacher would consider legit for her class.
MrHappyMushroom - February 10, 2012
Oh you'd be suprised.
I had this one teacher who took at least 15 minutes at the beginning of class to read us email forwords.

And I'd still rather watch TG USA over about anything on any other station
I’ve really enjoyed the first two actual episodes of this season of TG UK, but their India special was awful.

I’ve just always enjoyed reruns of it on BBC America

What? There are actually very good programs on that channel.
And I’m not talking about UFO’s, Bigfoot or the Boogie Man either.
Catbacker98 - February 10, 2012
A lot of it anymore isn't
But once in a while they come thru with something of true brillance, i.e. “America The Story of Us”
MeatGeek - February 10, 2012
They do tend to mess stuff up on
“How The States Get Their Shapes” though…
jtarkman - February 10, 2012
Yeah shrugs...
That’s still better than that damn Logging show or “Swamp People” or especially Ice Road Truckers…what’s that got to do with ffing history?
MeatGeek - February 10, 2012
Exactly

jtarkman - February 11, 2012
Ancient Aliens is still the best series on History!
Aside from crazy-haired opinions, there is a ton of great information.

Take it with a grain of salt (which is generally good advice for ANYTHING in any form of media), but I definitely find it interesting.

He meant will Shane transfer like so many have.
I don’t think so. I certainly hope not.

I don't think so.
You could see the writting on the wall with the other guys, I don’t get the same feeling from Shane.

I actually don’t get that feeling from any of the guys this year, though I will be interested to see how they get the Lithuanian in on scholly.
Maybe he pulls a Bill Snyder and greyshirt’s the kid for a year until he has another scholarship. I have heard talk that he may go to prep school for a year because of grades…
jtarkman - February 10, 2012
I would be shocked if Frank doesn't run someone off to make room for him.
Collin's Bloody Elbow - February 10, 2012
Maybe JO?
jtarkman - February 10, 2012
I'll bet Lawrence or Watson are the two run off.
Sean T - February 10, 2012
That would be my guess...
mac attack ict - February 10, 2012
Yeah, but they wouldnt have any time to transfer anywhere else
JO hasnt developed like they thought he would. Plus Diaz is much farther along than JO, and you are bring in two more big men. Frank needs to keep as many guards and small forwards as he can, he’ll have plenty of big men.
jtarkman - February 10, 2012
JO is far and away a better shot blocker than Diaz.
There is more than one aspect of playing good basketball. And scoring is not the only metric that measures success.
Catbacker98 - February 10, 2012
I knew Frank was loud (who didn't)
But I don’t think I’ve ever heard anything bad about him as far as the language he was using.
EMAW 4 Ever (iphone) - February 10, 2012 via iPhone app
He drops the F bomb quite a lot (or used to anyway)
and it was clearly obvious that’s what he was saying when the camera would be trained on him going into a timeout as he was yelling at someone for any particular reason.
It was a criticism of his by the media when he first took over, but there really hasn’t been much mention here lately.
Jeremy Sharp - February 10, 2012

I will start the speculation with a theory that it won’t come out today because now that the big east has listed their price of exit, Louisville and Cincinnati are coming with them.
This is based on nothing in particular.

k-stater86 - February 10, 2012
Just released
proposed rule changes by the NCAA for football
I don’t like the changing of the kickoff line (are we in HS again??), plue moving the touchback line to the 25. I know they are looking to make these things safer, but at this point we might as well bubble wrap the kids, throw some flags on them, and disallow any form of touching.
Its a CONTACT sport for a reason. And it’s that contact that people go to games to see. I’m all for protecting the players, limiting late hits and spearing, but c’mon noone wants to see powderpuff touch football…..
jtarkman - February 10, 2012
haven't read the rules yet
but how does moving the touchback line from the 20 to the 25 make it any safer? I mean, this just shortens the field for the offense by 5 yards if the other team’s kicker has a big leg. Again, without checking out the actual link yet, this sounds totally arbitrary and dumb.
Jeremy Sharp - February 10, 2012
According to the explanation given
its supposed to promote taking touchbacks, in an effort to lower injuries resulting from kick returns
jtarkman - February 10, 2012
Exactly.
It makes it less “cost-effective” to take a kick out of the endzone, because you have to have a 25+ yard return to even get past break-even.
Collin's Bloody Elbow - February 10, 2012
Freak accidents and injuries will happen
but serious injuries occur simply because of poor technique and lack of fundementals. I spend 4 years getting my kids in junior football to keep their head up when they tackle because you GREATLY reduce your chance of a concussion and more importantly a neck / spine injury if you do so. However, any college / pro game you watch has players dropping their head all the time (looking at you Polamalu).
Want fewer injuries? Flag them every time they drop their head – I don’t care if it is on the tackler or the ball carrier. Sorry for the vent, but it is a pet peave since it is easily correctable.
mac attack ict - February 10, 2012
Makes sense
at least to a guy who has never played a snap of football in his life.
Jeremy Sharp - February 10, 2012
Does nerf count?
MrHappyMushroom - February 10, 2012
I guess I have played sandlot football
but the whole idea behind why i even did that was so my friends and I could pummel this one kid that none of us really liked. It was fun.
Jeremy Sharp - February 10, 2012
Agreed
to all of that ^
jtarkman - February 10, 2012
It also doesn't hurt to see what you are trying to tackle...or to keep your head in front...or to drop your hips, wrap up and drive through contact.
Tha is why I get worked up about fundementals – good tackling and running is safe tackling and running.
mac attack ict - February 10, 2012
I wish someone would have taught
that to Tysyn Hartman……
jtarkman - February 10, 2012
and probably makes it a bit easier to make a good tackle
again, coming from someone who has never actually done it before.
And this is something we ALL would like to see improve next year…good tackling.
Jeremy Sharp - February 10, 2012
reading the proposed changes now
So, umm, didn’t the kick-off USED to take place from the 35 yard line, and they moved it to the 30 several years ago to encourage FEWER touchbacks and more returns? So, essentially what they are saying is they goofed up and want to switch it back.
And I get the touchback thing now. It is more effective to take the touchback and gain 25 yards instead of running out of the endzone and gaining 18 yards.
Jeremy Sharp - February 10, 2012
Yeah, I think they also moved it back because
so many kicks were going out of the back of the endzone. This is why the NFL line was like the 25 for a long time, because Kickers (often) get stronger as they get older.
jtarkman - February 10, 2012
So lemme get this straight
In college it used to be the 35, but there were too many touchbacks, so they move it to the 30.
The NFL used to be the 25, but there were too many returns (and injuries) so they move it to the 30.
Now there are too many injuries in college, so they are going to move it back to the 35 (IIRC, pretty much all of the coaches OPPOSED the change from 35 to 30 back when it happened).
At the beginning of the year, in the NFL, I remember there being a LOT of touchbacks. But then as the season went on, it seemed like players (return specialists) were getting tired of not being able to do their job, so they started taking them out even when they were 9 yards deep anyway. Would be interesting to look at the numbers to see if the trend really did change as the season progressed (like it appeared to through my observations).
I just think it is humorous how NCAA and NFL had completely different reasons for making the changes at the time the change was originally made (I remember the NCAA touting that moving to the 30 would make the game more entertaining by promoting more returns and fewer touchbacks).
Jeremy Sharp - February 10, 2012
I must correct myself
The NFL line was the 30, they changed their rules last year to move it to the 35
As you can see HERE the new proposed NCAA rule clearly mimics the NFL rules
jtarkman - February 10, 2012
I thought you must have meant that WAY back in the day it was the 25
then it moved to the 30 at some point, and this before this season was changed to the 35.
Because I thought it was odd that College used to be 35, but changed to 30, and NFL used to be 30, but changed to 35.
The rule is now the same, and they are actually using the same reasoning now. which I’m fine with. The biggest problem I had with the difference was that NFL was spouting safety as their reason, and NCAA was claiming added excitement and special teams play. When the NFL made the rule change, I remember I commented about the difference in reasoning for the rules, and I believe BlackCats said something to the effect of “Well, the NFL pays a lot of money to those players so safety should be a concern, and of course the NCAA doesn’t pay the college players, so who cares about safety” (and there was a great deal of sarcasm in the response as well).
Jeremy Sharp - February 10, 2012
Yawn...
Might as well go to the fridge during KOs if this goes through.
Catbacker98 - February 10, 2012
Also, is it just me
or are the rules regarding punting (blocking someone into the punter, etc) and kick returning (having someone blocked into a returner, opportunity to catch the ball, etc) just getting more and more complicated. So much so that there is so much interpretation allowed by the officials that a player really has no idea what he can and can’t do anymore? I know I’m totally confused as to what would result in a flag and what would not (aside from not even attempting to block a punt of tackle a returner)
Jeremy Sharp - February 10, 2012
Again, its about safety
but it just seems to be more confusing all the time. Like the “Halo” rule. It was about keeping the returner from getting plowed as soon as he caught the ball, but it was hard to enforce because its a judgement call about how close 3-yards is from a distance. It was confusing, and not really helpful, so they dropped it.
jtarkman - February 10, 2012
More boredom on kickoffs to match the NFL...thanks for nothing NCAA.
This is getting ridiculous. Special Teams are a critical component of football and, as such, should be left alone. The NFL has proven how watching paint dry dull KO returns have become.
Catbacker98 - February 10, 2012
Great writeup from BON

iCatDormRat - February 10, 2012
Texas will lead by 10 or so points with about 5 minutes left,
before the Cats rip their hearts out and beat them by 3 with a 17-5 run to end it. The Sporting Gods would have it no other way.
Collin's Bloody Elbow - February 10, 2012

iCatDormRat - February 10, 2012

Emma's Law
If you haven’t been following the saga of Emma and her refusal to color a KU Jayhawk for Kansas Day, well checkout yesterday’s comments in the slate.
In light of this ridiculous segment of the required curriculum by the State of Kansas, I propose Emma’s Law.
Teachers should teach about jayhawkers, but this should be the picture the kids color.
BlackCats - February 10, 2012
Remember Osceola!
MeatGeek - February 10, 2012
On that note
if you listen to pro-Jayhawkers, all they talk about is the sacking of Lawrence (in 1856) when a group of pro-slavery Kansans burnt down the Free State hotel and killed a guy, like it was some massive raid perpetrated by Missourians (very not true on that count). John Brown then led a massacre in eastern Kansas that killed several pro-slavery settlers.
In 1861, as a part of a counter towards Gen. Price’s moves in Missouri, a group of Jayhawkers sacked (and pillaged) the Missouri town of Osceola. This eventually (sort of) led to the Quantril raid on Lawrence in 1863. After which, our very own Issac Goodnow (co-founder of Manhattan and K-State) said it was a much nicer town afterwards (HA). Quantril was a sadistic, cold-blooded murder, from OHIO not Missouri (nor ever really lived in MO), and killed people on both sides of the border, and in Arkansas.
People have a tendency to see only the things that give their story support, and not all fo the things that make the story true…

Smashburger burgers are ok.
Personally I like the burgers from the Vortex (it is a restaurant found only in Atlanta) the best.
There is, in my opinion, no french fry that comes close to competing with Freddy’s.
Never had In-N-Out or Griffs. Don’t know that I have had Whataburger.
I like the Chick-Fil-A spicy chicken sandwich, but Wendy’s version is also good (totally different method of cooking though, and the pressure fried method, with pickle juice, that Chick-Fil-A employs is why they are so juicy).
Jeremy Sharp - February 10, 2012
Griffs is a hamburger joint in Irving that is not all that good but edible.

And we can always refer to them as War of Yankee Agression Terrorists.

Getting ready to head south to the game.
I’m excited and I might be able to log in to make an occasional comment in the open game thread although I shan’t try to keep up with reading what is posted.
Thanks TB for the heads up on where to eat.

i was hoping to find a more relevant place to post this, but
Yesterday ( Saturday for me)) while standing in a parking garage on the lower level of some luxury condos on the Gold Coast (city south of Brisbane)here in Australia (I’m on vacation for the next13 days), my wife spotted a window sticke and power at on the back window of a jeep Cherokee with an Aussie plate. We have photo evidence too. Any way sucks to see us drop a game at bramlage south….plus big Monday for me will be like big Tuesday afternoon

Enjoy the Gold Coast. I loved it. Isn't this the rainy season there? Or are you far enough south that you can avoid it?
I didn’t bother to check when monsoon season was the last time I was there, and boy did I regret it.
