K-State Basketball
K-State takes on Texas in Manhattan tonight. Peter has the preview over at Burnt Orange Nation, and it would be fair to say Peter has a pretty damn good read on K-State's personnel this year.
Apparently practice has been much better since the Oklahoma game on Saturday. It sure is good to hear that we haven't had players running stairs in the practices leading up to a conference game, because that seemed to work really well as preparation for OU.
K-State needs to get better on defense. The Wildcats rank last in the conference in opponent field-goal percentage during conference play.
SB Nation's Bracketology has K-State on the six line this week.
K-State Football
Chris Cosh's move to USF still isn't officially official, but it's about as close as it gets. Haskin muses on that subject, among others.
K-State Women's Basketball
Oklahoma handed K-State its first conference loss last night in Bramlage.
Big 12 Basketball
Oklahoma kept Texas Tech winless in conference play with a 64-55 victory last night.

Dear Frank
If you are still having to punish college kids by conference play, you need to reexamine your approach to coaching during the noncon.
BlackCats - January 18, 2012
Exactly.
Martin definitely knows how to coach kids up.
But I think he needs to realize that at a certain point you have to let kids play through their mistakes too. Nobody can be perfect 100% of the time. Nobody. Michael Jordan wasn’t perfect 100% of the time.
So, after the non-con games that he likes to play, I think he needs to take a bit of a different approach in conference games, otherwise I don’t think he will ever win a Big 12 regular season title.
Although, by the way he seems willing to sacrifice conference wins to make a point, I’m not so sure he values conference titles so much.
ChrisP Wildcat - January 18, 2012
Again, I bring up my point about maturity
Martin is still immature in some of his coaching aspects—as it compares to other coaches in his level and quality.
jtarkman - January 18, 2012
I agree, HOWEVER,
if Angel was doing something detrimental to the team (ie not practicing hard, poor attitude, etc) then I have no problem with the benching. I have to assume this was the case.
The short and long term success of this team will be better with Angel fully on board.
yeahboozin - January 18, 2012
I have no problem with the benching...
But tired legs makes for low shooting percentage and defensive struggles. Both of which we experienced against OU.
BlackCats - January 18, 2012
Agreed
even Greenawalt’s famous conditioning cannot overcome pure and simple tiredness.
jtarkman - January 18, 2012
I was talking more about his pulling of players in the Baylor game.
But, yeah, we don’t know why Angel was pulled for OU, so I have to give Frank the benefit of the doubt on that one.
Heck, it could have been for grades, and I can’t argue with that at all.
ChrisP Wildcat - January 18, 2012
Frank specifically said in his postgame show
that Angel didn’t play because of how he practiced
jtarkman - January 18, 2012
I remember him saying that it wouldn't be fair to Angel or the team if he said why Angel was benched.
Then talked about how if you aren’t buying into the program that can get you benched.
I don’t remember him giving a specific reason for his benching, but regardless, my point remains that I give Frank the benefit of the doubt on that one.

No wonder we never saw Nino last year

I agree with him
It does make sense, and I hope he comes to Manhattan. I’m not sold on him being the next head coach, but I wouldn’t object right now.
Sean T - January 18, 2012
I agree with you Sean
I think it would be an improvement for our defense compared to what we have had for quite some time.
Venables name always seems to be at the top of a lot of short lists for openings every season, but he has stayed put in OU. I’m trying to figure out if this is because he really thought he would eventually have an opportunity to be the head coach at OU, or if maybe he would RATHER be a D-coordinator than a head coach (and I’m guessing he is making a pretty decent salary there in Norman, and has a lot fewer headaches to deal with than Bobby does).
Or is Venables one of those guys who is not really head coach material? I honestly don’t know, but we have seen several (successful) coordinators go on to become head coaches and have pretty much flopped. They just don’t have the right make up to be a head coach, and are better suited to be a coordinator.

I read some of the comments under Ubben’s piece on this, and there’s a guy there who alleges he was porking a student.
jonfmorse - January 18, 2012
Not sure why that would be an immediate cause for anything to be upset about.
KSU has no limitations towards relationships among staff/faculty/student body. The problem comes in when that relationship has some kind of leverage for one of the parties.
Him sleeping with a student (if that’s what happened) isn’t necessarily a reason for hard feelings to develop.

If BV and JL ain’t happening then an outside hire needs to be made. Someone young, up-and-coming, fiery, a sound tactician and hustler on the recruiting trail. But something tells me Snyder would prefer to keep it in-house. Moe Latimore it is.

If it was a serious injury then I'd have a problem with this.
But most likely the team doctor released him to practice if there was no pain

I think it was in Hawaii sometime
an announcer during one of the TV broadcasts remarked that Greenawalt would have to be either 1) a strength and conditioning coach or 2) a member of the Russian mob with his looks.
iCatDormRat - January 18, 2012
I think you're right
I laughed. But then, Martin looks like he could be an Italian mafia boss himself.
Sean T - January 18, 2012
Not a bad cover for a Cuban.
Though the mob used to spend a LOT of time in Havana pre-Castro. I’m going to have to request a DNA test. I would not be shocked if Frank’s grandfather was Sicilian.
BlackCats - January 18, 2012
i remember that was gottleib
because he kept dropping that he played professionally in russia, as if that would impress someone. but dammit if he didn’t mention it several times.
also, are we getting a pregame write-up for the game tonight?
k-stater86 - January 18, 2012

If you watched ou against baylor or ok state theb you know this would be a huge step back
EMAW 4 Ever (iphone) - January 18, 2012 via iPhone app
oh I agree, that is my way of saying "not much"
ATL Jim - January 18, 2012
What about Crash Ekeler?
does he have the street cred to be a coordinator? I don’t know the answer to that.
Furnace76 - January 18, 2012
I dont know, were the Indiana lbs any good this year....it is a stretch, if we were gonna go that route I would presume it is
Joe Bob or JG as Pan said above
ATL Jim - January 18, 2012
Eks has only completed his first year as D-coordinator at IU
having made the move out there I’m assuming he isn’t ready to jump ship just yet. But man would I love to see my boy back at K-State.
CT-K-Stater - January 18, 2012
Leavitt?
I just have my doubts he comes back to college ball. He made good money on the buyout at USF; he’s coaching in the NFL and probably making darn good money there.
Only way I could see him coming to KSU is with the understanding it was about a 7 year gig with the goal of further grooming Sean to be a head coach some day. Not saying I’m right.
Furnace76 - January 18, 2012
also, not that this would ever happen, but Randy Shannon
ATL Jim - January 18, 2012

ATL Jim - January 18, 2012
Ummmm
Sean T - January 18, 2012

ATL Jim - January 18, 2012
Heard he's being looked at by the Jaguars for that exact post
CT-K-Stater - January 18, 2012
His NFL numbers weren't that bad
EMAW 4 Ever - January 18, 2012
Boom.
Even more semi-official Coshness
GTcat - January 18, 2012
That actually looks very official
Especially with Skip Holtz actually saying it is happening
jtarkman - January 18, 2012
well yea, I thought the same too...
So far that appears to be the only story out there…sleep well tonight cat fans!
GTcat - January 18, 2012
I cant sleep well until I know who our DC is gonna be
Honestly as K-State fans we need to cheer hard for the giants this weekend if thwe 49ers lose and we pick up levaitt in time we can still get some good recruits on the trail but if we have to wait until febuary we may be in trouble.
EMAW 4 Ever - January 18, 2012
