K-State Basketball
Saturday was supposed to be the day K-State got back on track after a 1-2 start to conference play and a frustrating home loss to Baylor. Instead, K-State ran into an Oklahoma team that couldn't miss and dropped to 1-3 in Big 12 play after an 82-73 loss to the Sooners in Norman.
Freshman Angel Rodriguez did not play against the Sooners after poor practices following the Baylor game.
As usual, K-State is off to a slow start in conference play, and faces an uphill climb to get back in the hunt.
It's going to be a while before Frank lives down the "ever heard of that one?" line that he dropped on Stan Weber after the Baylor game. That may be a good thing.
K-State Football
At former K-State coach Vince Gibson's funeral, his old rival at KU, Pepper Rodgers, reminisced about the long-settled feud between the two.
It was not a good weekend for K-State's biggest stars in the NFL. Darren Sproles and the New Orleans Saints lost to the San Francisco 49ers after a wild fourth-quarter finish, while Jordy Nelson and the Green Bay Packers were stunned by the New York Giants.
K-State Women's Basketball
The Wildcats are now 4-0 in Big 12 play after beating No. 10 Texas Tech on the road, 62-61.
Big 12 Basketball
Missouri got a relatively easy win over Texas in Columbia on Saturday ... KU struggled mightily before putting away Iowa State in Lawrence ... Baylor hung a c-note on Oklahoma State ... and Texas A&M downed Texas Tech in College Station in a game that literally no one cared about.

Any rumors floating around Angel has left the team?
Sean T - January 16, 2012
Would this really surprise anyone at all?
I hope that Frank isn’t prepping our best PG prospect for a Judge-like running off, but nothing would surprise me at this point.
Collin's Bloody Elbow - January 16, 2012
Judge had problems off the court which forced him to leave town,
but other than that, I can’t argue with your point. The only thing which would surprise me, at this point, regarding KSU b/ball would be to see consistency, poise and stability, on and off the court. Now, if I saw that, I would be surprised.

Guess this is one way to start one.
Anon_the_younger - January 16, 2012
No
BlackCats - January 16, 2012
That's what a I figured
My mom is all worried because her idiot boss said something about Angel leaving. I told her he’s stupid, but she’s still worried.
Sean T - January 16, 2012
last week i defended franks attitude during the infamous interview
but i can’t defend his stubbornness. i don’t care what kind of effort angel gave in practice. when we have shane running point and getting the ball directly taken from him for easy transition points, it’s time to point in a real point guard.
our offense sucked. probably not because of strategy. partially because of shots not falling, but mainly because of horrible effort on cuts, screens and passes.
we looked like frank ran a full practice the night before that game (which is possible)
I never turn a game off early, but i had to walk away from the tv after 12 minutes into the second half. it was clear we weren’t gonna break through the wall. what a disappointment.
k-stater86 - January 16, 2012
Hopefully Frank doesn't keep "stubborning" us to a 6-12 conference record.
We need Angel playing to be a successful team.
Collin's Bloody Elbow - January 16, 2012
Ya know
After our showing at KU, I figured we’d be 1-3 to open B12 play, just not like this.
Systematically destroy MU, take Baylor to the wire and then derp up OU?
WTF?
Enough basketball, who wants to start a “Draft your own Tebow” campaign for Klein? The comparisons are already there, will only get stronger next year, and is OptimusKlein’s best shot at making the NFL. Maybe Tampa or another bottom dweller will pull the trigger.
BlackCats - January 16, 2012
Tampa unlikely...
Maybe Buffalo? Are they actually happy with Fitzpatrick? No one is going to take him even if he wins the Heisman, above the 4th round anyway.

ESPN Gameday
Not sure if anyone caught the ESPN College Day discussion Saturday morning, but one of the topics that arose was decorum in college basketball or lack thereof. Some of it was focused on the players…taunting, fighting, etc. but the majority was directed at the coaches, surprisingly HCFM name never came up. Hubert Davis made a solid point that coaches are teachers and when you have coaches acting in certain ways it’s only logical their players will follow suit. Minus a few isolated incidents throughout his tenure, I think our team has always acted with class on the court, mixed in with some youth emotion and intensity. I would agree that some of the most respected coaches out there don’t have to submit to cursing and yelling at your players…Coach Wooden, Coach Smith, etc. HCFM is who he is and although I personally don’t agree with is behavior at times, it’s a package deal and I do admire his passion. Plus I do think he loves his players but again I don’t agree with his actions at time, but I don’t mind being in the minority. I’ve been reamed on this board before for this comment, but I think at times his tirades are to mask being out coached in a particular game.
ksucats97 - January 16, 2012
I agree with much of this
jtarkman - January 16, 2012
I would actually go the other direction
When he’s out coached he just seems to just sit on the bench. See the KU game. He’s all fired up when the kids are not doing what he thinks they should be. Whether that’s because he’s getting out coached or because the kids are actually not doing what he coached is for others to decide.
BlackCats - January 16, 2012
He was pissed at the guys through the whole KU game
said he stopped trying
jtarkman - January 16, 2012
I would tend to agree with this, simply because it mirrors my personal mannerisms.
TheBigE - January 16, 2012
So, Venables is visiting Clemson?
If only there were some college team that had a gaping, festering wound at the defensive coordinator position where Brent Venables once worked — even PLAYED — where he might well be immediately considered the front-runner for the head coaching job once the current head coach retires.
jonfmorse - January 16, 2012
Not to mention job security
Where short of a felony you will never even have the potential to be fired
EMAW 4 Ever (iphone) - January 16, 2012 via iPhone app
That would be a really lucky high school.
BlackCats - January 16, 2012
i've heard that there is virtually zero chance
that venables will ever coach at k-state again. something involving a big donor. not sure if there is truth in this.
k-stater86 - January 16, 2012
Wasn't it...
A big donors wife?
BlackCats - January 16, 2012
Lunardi has KSU as a 7 seed
In his latest Bracketology playing 10 seed Dayton in the first round. A win over them would most likely mean a second round game against 2 seed Ohio State. While I certainly think we can do better than a 7 seed I actually would not hate our chances at making the sweet sixteen with that draw since Ohio State has proven to be very beatable this year.
Kohawk84 - January 16, 2012 via iPhone app
I'd take it.
Making the tourney is all I care about at this point. Win the games you are supposed to, then I’ll start concerning myself with actually winning a game in said tourney.
Not saying anyone else can’t hope a dream, I’m just not going to. Yet.
BlackCats - January 16, 2012
I'm so frustrated by the Cats the last two games, all I want is for them to win a game in the conference tourney, and then make the NCAA and not totally humiliate themselves.
Sean T - January 16, 2012
I have a feeling that this won't be the last "Franked" game this season
And I’m worried this may be the start of a long slide
EMAW 4 Ever (iphone) - January 16, 2012 via iPhone app
This is also my biggest fear.
Collin's Bloody Elbow - January 16, 2012
Guys
this happens every year. They’ll get it turned around.
GCat - January 17, 2012
I hope you're right.
Collin's Bloody Elbow - January 17, 2012
On the bright side to Sproles team's loss
He did set a record for most receptions in a postseason game…so there’s that.
And the 49ers won, which make me very happy :-)

Why? It was true at the time
But at the time, I thought the team had heart and good coaching. I’m not so sure about either right now.

Guess what #1 was? Lolzers.
I certainly enjoy the pub, but you just know it burns him up inside that KSU won 10 games, haha.
xrayxtals - January 16, 2012
"At the same time, I really, really enjoy being wrong."
I disagree that it burns him up that the Cats won 10 games. I don’t think he dislikes K-State. He can’t like how we fans took Missouri’s defection, but that’s not the issue. I think he’s baffled by how the Cats won more games than teams that all his numbers say were better, but he states he enjoyed the ride, as did we all.

In his ‘Hoops Thoughts’ article he writes:

I just want to point out something about our poor defense against OU...
Everyone chalks it up to being “bad defense”. The question is where it was bad, because I don’t necessarily feel like our guards did that poorly at the initial sense of stopping penetration, denying shots, etc. Where our defense broke down was when the ball went inside. If you take out their two starting bigs – Andrew Fitzgerald (9-10) and Romero Osby (6-8) – the rest of the team went 13-33, or 39%. That’s really not that bad of defense, especially considering that some of those buckets were quick buckets off of live-ball turnovers, as well as resulting FTs. The biggest complaint I had about guard defense is that we coughed up some fouls because of slow closeouts on extreme ball movement.
In my mind, defensively, the OU game was the worst our frontcourt has played this year.
TheBigE - January 16, 2012
The bigs were non-existent on both ends (I'm not counting Nino as a big).
And the cherry on top was Fitzgerald burying about a thousand 16-footers while his frontcourt mates made every type of turnaround, pick-and-pop, etc. OU had their best possible game and we sucked. I should have seen it as a bigger trap than I did, because of how OU started the schedule.
Itchy n Scratchy - January 16, 2012
This.
The frontline had its worst showing on Saturday. JO disappeared after a few really strong games.

I heard a rumor that Cosh is interviewing for other DC jobs....
Anyone else hear this?
rich04 - January 16, 2012
if you are teasing....
Anon_the_younger - January 16, 2012
True story...
Well atleast the fact that I heard a rumor, thats why I’m asking to see if anyone else heard it too.
rich04 - January 16, 2012
I heard that about 2 weeks ago b4 the Cotton Bowl
but nothing since. I’d say there’s no traction to it.
GTcat - January 16, 2012
He's on short list for DC position at USF.
Has interviewed with Holtz.
Based on all the interviews, seems like maybe Bill has pushed Cosh out the door but wants him to have a place to land.
yeahboozin - January 16, 2012
I'm fine with Bill helping him out
as long as he gets him out soon so we can get an aggressive DC with a winning attitude!
rich04 - January 16, 2012
Reports out of Tampa paper that Holtz intends to announce new DC tomorrow and Cosh appears to be the guy.
Please be true.

On the plus side of the NFL playoffs
Future HCJL found a way on defense to stop Darren Sproles, which means in 2016 we’ll have a great defense…haha

Doing some digging on some other fact checking in another thread about Adam Helm
And ran across some neat nuggets from Haskin. Check this one about the “OU asst coach swap of 1999” and what could have been that I didn’t know until tonight:
Wow, Rex Ryan under HCBS, really? Seems like some sort of twisted joke. Snyder probably felt uncomfortable about all of the feet comments when he was on his treadmill in his office.
GTcat - January 16, 2012
Thats a weird thought
EMAW 4 Ever (iphone) - January 16, 2012 via iPhone app
speaking of D-coordinators...
Let’s hope the USF+KSU+DC ties don’t just stop with Chris Cosh.
GTcat - January 16, 2012
Good find.
Should have scrolled all the way down before posting.
yeahboozin - January 17, 2012
What it speaks to is just how much of a heavyweight Snyder used to be at hiring assistants.
