Open Thread: Meet John Currie

According to everything I've read, John Currie will have his introductory press conference at 10:30 AM CST.  You can find the free Passpot link here.

Feel free to comment on what you hear.  Obviously, it's too early to say anything definitive about him, but it's not bad to discuss first impressions.

The new president is speaking...

No mention of the “American Dream” so far. Apparently, he doesn’t know how we do things around here.

First impression, thirty seconds into the speech...

Schulz/Currie are 100 times better at running an athletic department than Krause/Wefald.

That's a hell of a first impression

well…sort of…

Well, the bar wasn't set very high.
Warning: Tripping Hazard!

Low Bar.

Currie was at the Cotton Bowl in 2001...

Acknowledges the ass kicking given to Tennessee.

I'd like to know what his immediate plans for the football/basketball programs.
They want to create the best fan experience in the Big 12...

Just don’t forget to have enough hot dogs.

so does that

not include fcs teams?

and

wildcat march?

+100

awful.

Paraphrased from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kansas_State_University_Marching_Band:
Wildcat March: In October, 1928, John Philip Sousa was to make an appearance at K-State. A petition, signed by most of the student body, was presented to Sousa on October 10, requesting that he compose a Kansas State Agricultural College march. Sousa produced a few wadded up pages of sheet music he intended to use to remove feces from his nether regions while visiting the privy. The “piece” is now an integral part of the pre-game show at every football game and is normally one of the selections you will hear the “Pride” playing in each of the parades they march in each year.
Totally believable...

…and makes perfect sense now. Only a few things that will make me sit in silence at a K-State football game…the 2008 defense and the Wildcat march.

JMart: What is your vision/who is John Currie...

Generic answer: What you see is what you get.

but

You know Ron Prince would have come up with something move clever, but that didn’t make him good at his job.

*more clever
Currie: The biggest checkbook doesn't always win.
Unless you're Texas...

Unless you’re Texas playing anyone but K-State. :D

Thanks for the play by play so far.

I’m unable to hear it at work. Just my first reaction after reading about him is that this is a solid hire. I don’t want to say he’ll turn everything around and that he’ll make the KSU AD a money making machine, but I think he will infuse some much needed forward thinking into the department.

That was short...it's over.
Probably not too surprising

It’s not like he’s had a lot of time to probably examine everything in the AD that needs fixing. What makes this hire more compelling is the fact that Big12 Athletic Departments are looking for ways to cut costs for next year. Story was here this morning in the KC Star.

5-year contract for $350,000 annually*

Possible first order of business: no assistant coaches to make more money than the AD….?
