Bring On The Cats

Signing Day Open Thread

Today we will start hearing which players are wise enough to sign on the dotted line to play for Bill Snyder.  A list of our recruits for the 2009 class can be found at GoPowercat.com.

Post your thoughts, opinions, articles found and maybe a little smack talk here.  Two rules only: just because a recruit turns us down doesn't mean there's something wrong with him, and be very careful about linking to any premium content from recruiting services.

Go Cats!

Any word on Daniel Thomas

and what position he’s going to play? He’s got good size.

Not sure...most likely RB but possible QB.

—- Troy Butler, 6-1, 200, DB

—- Thomas Ferguson, 6-1, 205, DB

Hey can you also post

their ratings from either rivals or scout? I know that’s not the best way to measure a recruit, but until they get onto the field it’s a viable opinion.

Sure...

Give me a minute…or 10.

Thanks

I’m looking them up as well.

—- Tomasi Mariner, 6-4, 290, OL

I'm sure it will be much cleaner when we are done...

and can link to Rivals and Scout.

3*—- Tramaine Thompson, 5-8, 165, ATH

Damn

another Brandon Banks type player to add to the roster. Rivals says RB (and 159 lbs) with 4.4 speed.

He’s going to need to bulk up.

WR or RB or both, IMO.
Maybe one of those guys

who should be put into the open field.

"You're goal is to make people miss you."

2* Rivals - Zach Trujillo, 6-4, 230, TE

2* Rivals - Meshak Williams, 6-4, 225, DL

2* Rivals - Ty Zimmerman, 6-2, 200, ATH

Rivals right now

just updated the signed LOI list for K-State

I see that....

3* Rivals - Clarence Bumpas, 5-11, 192, DB

Any word on Raymond Cotton yet?

Haven’t found anything on him yet.

I think there is a signing day party...I'll see if there's any news.
They must have called before the webmaster could update kstatesports.com
Rivals has Cornelius Lucas and Marcus Kennard...not on official site yet.

2* Rivals - Courtney Thompson, 6-0, 180, DB

I'm so not getting any work done today.
Me neither, but thanks anyways!
Andre Simmons signed with Colorado
4* Rivals WR out of Juco...FYI
Gee

and I thought CU hated JUCO transfers….

They were just jealous.
Yeah, I thought they were too good for JUCOs
Rivals now has Carlton Callender and Emmanuel Lamur
Reports say

David Batts to sign with Washington.

Oh what the hell
His best friend plays for UW...and Sarkisian is a shady recruiter, IMO.
Not that there isn't a lot of shady recruiting...

He’s just been caught doing it…twice.

But it's Washington

They’re terrible.

Rivals lists John Hubert as signed.
Some people are saying Cotton to Ole Miss, but I haven't seen it anywhere yet.
Damn

that was figured though – looks like they’re going to pull in a nice little class.

Article on RB recruit Tim Flanders

"Coach Snyder said I was the No. 1 guy on their board," Flanders said. "I could have a big impact right away."

Interesting…I guess Bryce Brown is a nice-to-have.

Damnit...K-State, update your signing day page!
Finally...

2* Rivals - William Lawson, 6-8, 290, OL

QB A.J. Graham signs with Marshall

Link

Graham

I was really hoping we could get this guy. Would have fit in nicely in Snyders new offense

2* Rivals - Cornelius Lucas, 6-8, 275, OL

Is it just me

or do we never seem to sign any highly rated O or D linemen?

If Keenan Taylor signs...at least he is 3* according to Rivals.

3* Rivals - Torell Miller, 6-3, 200, DB

Definitely more blue collar than blue chip thus far.

Then again, most of K-State’s greatest players were not highly rated during recruiting.

3* Rivals - Joseph Bonugli, 5-11, 192, DB

Not that anybody cares....

Pretty sure this guy is my cousin based on last name and location.

Dual-threat QB signee with Ok State.

3* Rivals - Kennan Taylor, 6-5, 275, OL

Pretty sure it's "Keenan", but I could be wrong...along with everyone else.
Yeah, that looks right (Keenan)

http://kansasstate.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?pr_key=72260

Wow, a whoppin’ 249lbs for an OL? I hope that’s a misprint.

Let's hope

he gains a few of the freshmen 15’s

K-State's site lists him at 6'5" and 275#s
I like their scale better!
FWIW...Denard Robinson and Adrian Witty choose Michigan.

I hate to say it, but Crabtree was right

This just isn’t a great class. It’s solid but not really what we needed to re-energize the fan base. I’m a little surprised we whiffed on every single 4-star we went after, save Daniel Thomas.

I’m not holding it against Snyder or the staff, because they were dealt a shitty hand, but next year simply has to be better than this or we will be sitting here in three years wondering why we’re still not winning more than 7 games a year. Yes, coaching was the primary problem in 2008, but don’t kid yourself – there’s talent issues on this team, too, and they will be markedly worse when these seniors graduate after next season.

I, of course, reserve the right to be infinitely more optimistic if Snyder somehow completes the miracle of getting Bryce Brown and Chris Harper to become Wildcats, but that’s the only thing I think could actually create a buzz around this class. (Other than John Hubert, and now that he has signed, by all means – buzz away.)

The worse thing for recruiting this year...

was not making a bowl game. I think that ranks slightly higher than the coaching change since Snyder brings some credibility. Top recruits don’t want to come to a school that might or might not even qualify for a bowl. If we even get to a mediocre bowl this year, recruiting will have a much bigger stick for next year’s class.

Agree

Just like Martin and Co. had to do in ’07, Snyder and Co. are going to have to show some tangible improvement in ’09 to have any pull with the top echelons of recruits.

Anyone know why Angelo Pease hasn't signed yet?

Man, if we end today with NO QBs in the class after we pursued 15+, I’m just gonna have to shake my head…

That's what I fear...

…all this buzz over QBs, and it doesn’t sound like we’re going to get anyone. Ouch.

The simple truth is

It’s going to be a long uphill battle back to respectability. I don’t expect us to compete with Michigan, or even Ole Miss now that Nutt is there, but MARSHALL? They’re probably going to fire their coach this year – he hasn’t had a winning season yet. Graham picked the wrong Snyder, and it just makes me shake my head.

Some are saying we backed off on Graham...

I don’t know why.

Hey, we got the JC kid, Zimmerman

He was a QB in HS though I don’t know what their plans are for him now.

3* Rivals - Timothy Flanders, 5-9, 191, ATH

Picked K-State because he was being recruited as a RB.

3* Rivals - Emmanuel Lamur, 6-4, 214, DB

Ok, so is that like 6 DBs so far?

What’s up with that?

Yes...I think Batts going to UW opened the way for Bonugli.
Switching to a 4-2-5 defense next year

And minimizing the time our crappy linebackers stay on the field.

Remember the days when LB was one of our strengths?
Sadly, those memories are fading fast

And pretty much have been ever since the giant bust that was Marvin Simmons.

I knew I was missing somebody....

3* Rivals - John Hubert, 5-9, 190, RB

Missed this one too...

2* Rivals - Andre McDonald, 6-8, 270, OL

Rivals has him as a 280# TE with a 4.7 40!

25 signees so far for this class.
Is there a limit to how many players a school can bring in a single draft?
Not draft...recruiting season.
Somebody smarter than me will have to answer that

I think the limit is 25 recruits, and of course there’s a limit of 85 total scholarships.

I'm looking at the Ole Miss signing board with 33 so far...

Gonna have to greyshirt and place at juco a lot it would seem.

Still no official on Cotton…

Of course, the ones already enrolled might count for last year's class.
2 listed as LOI on Rivals that are not on the official yet:

Carlton Callender – 3* DB
Marcus Kennard – 2* WR

A little levity in an otherwise disappointing day...

from Austin Meek at the TCJ.

Brown is vacationing with his uncle in Nebraska, Butler said, and won’t make any decisions until he returns.

“Vacationing” and “Nebraska” are just two words that don’t go together.

I hear Nebraska at this time of year is breathtaking.
WHAT THE HELL?

I’ve been swamped at work today (convenient) so I just now have been able to check in over the lunch hour. What happened to Batts? Washington? Really?

Sounds like the only QB is Zimmerman. Don’t know anything about him, but he’s local (Jordy incarnate?). Oh well, I guess we couldn’t expect much with Snyder getting a late start and trying to clean up the mess left by Prince.

Broke for lunch and...

2* Rivals - Ryan Doerr, 6-3, 185, P/K transfer from U of South Carolina
3* Rivals - Jeffrey Fitzgerald, 6-4, 280, DL transfer from U of Virginia

Daniel Thomas listed as QB now.
Cotton signs LOI with Ole Miss.

Looks like Tuberville knew where Cotton was going before everyone else...

Ole Mill?

It looks like it's slowed down, so I'll post what I have:

R** S? - Ty Zimmerman, 6-2, 200, ATH

So basically

Our top two “prized” recruits so far are:

QB – Daniel Thomas
LB – Grant Valentine

Well we needed help in both positions, but then again which position didn’t we need help in?

Sadly enough...those were Prince recruits.

Long snapper…we do not need another long snapper, I believe.
I went to the same high school that our current one came from…well, I went there for 1 year (I moved alot).

Late officials...

R*** S** - Carlton Callender, 6-1, 186, DB
R** S* - Marcus Kennard, 6-5, 199, WR
R** S** - Angelo Pease, 5-11, 205, ATH

Still waiting on Bryce Brown...

I’ve heard that he will be visiting K-State with his family…some hope there. Maybe we could offer him the QB position…?

Bryce Brown can play where ever he wants.

I’m even ok naming him the successor to Bill Synder….

That's it!

Bryce Brown, Head-Coach-in-Waiting.

Instant gratification

I guess we live in an instant gratification society, so why should Wildcat fans be any different? I would think we should give Snyder and his staff a full year to recruit before we get to worked up about wether or not he can recruit anymore. You are going to fight a uphill battle trying to win over kids who have been talking to other schools for months. It is probably going to get a lot better from here. Expecting a top forty class in less then two months of recruiting is not realistic. Let’s see if they can coach these kids to some kind of bowl next year, and then see what happens. I love K-State, but we are not USC, we are going to have to show kids something before getting the better ones here. I believe we have the kindof staff that will over achieve with what they have to work with. Then the recruiting will start to improve.

No one expected a great class

I certainly didn’t.

But don’t expect us to throw confetti and streamers when our one 4-star commit backs out to go to a team that won ONE game last year, and another 4-star kid we were led to believe was all but in the bag stayed with CU.

The only surprises today were unpleasant ones.

Please save the purple sunshine-flavored Kool-Aid for GPC. Contrary to popular belief, Snyder is not 100 percent guaranteed to be successful the 2nd time around just because he was the 1st. People have a right to vent or otherwise be critical here.

I am cautiously optimistic. Only time will really tell how these kids develop.

I heard this on the sports talk radio station out of KC and it makes sense: A lot of the blue chip recruits are those that more than likely developed early in high school. Alot of these kids are still growing and will put on more weight, get stronger, etc. while in college. It’s hard to predict how a kid will perform at the collegiate level when they pack on 50 more lbs. (give or take). The blue chips are usually at the size a coach would expect for their respective position, so you pretty much know how good they are. Unfortunately, smaller schools (K-State) will lose out on these blue chips to the bigger schools and must rely on how they develop the recruits that they do get.

On a side note, it seems the blue chips that K-State won over in the past tend to be busts when they get on the field. Weird.

It's pretty simple

I want Snyder to win games. I don’t care how he does it or who he does it with. Winning recruiting wars is not winning games so I don’t get too out of shape about it.

We have some nice players in this class; I’m not trying to imply we don’t. Rivals isn’t perfect at what they do, either. But they’re getting better and eventually you have to find at least a few high-level impact players to win in this league. All I am saying is that if we are still mediocre for the next 4 years like we have been the last 5, we’ll know that coaching was not our only problem. It’s the Jimmie and Joes, not the Xs and Os.

Ron Prince: The Gift That Keeps On Giving!

Fortunately, we know that Snyder and company have been working on the class of 2010 too.

Hopefully, this time next year we will be up higher than 94th and 109th in the recruiting rankings. How did we get worse than Iowa State?

They got a 4-star player and we didn't

Apparently Daniel Thomas doesn’t count for this year since he was already enrolled.

I think I meant to say...

How did we let ourselves get worse than Iowa State?

Ossam Cook to greyshirt; attend Blinn CC.
Rivals 2* RB...5'8" 182# - 4.3/4.4 Forty
It appears that everyone on the football team is going to be over 6' tall....

except the RBs.
