Look, Jon, we all know how good of a coach he was in his first stint. We’re not arguing that he’s not a good coach, we’re arguing that this is the right move for K-State.
I’m listening, but unable to offer too many comments since I’m at work. Will throw in a recap later on. I agree with Pan though, he is hands down the best coach in the North right now. I just worry about the future of the program, especially since he has NO IDEA who his assistants will be.
It’s hard to be upset after hearing from Bill. It’s still not my first choice, but I trust him and I am looking forward to watching this process happen.
1. It sounds like this was done as a stop-gap answer to the instability within the program. Since no assistants are planned as of now, it looks like Bill may actually be here the full 5 years of his contract, or at least until the new UP gets settled in.
2. The guy has watched some football and paid close attention to what is going on in the world of football the last couple of days. He wasn’t just mowing his yard and playing golf. I’ll even go so far to say that these past 3 years off may have been good for him. Hopefully he’s realized what he needs to do to win in today’s age of football.
3. I truly hope this is the best decision for K-State. I would have liked to have grabbed a young head coach with a good track record, but for now that will have to wait. I have no doubt Bill has the ability to coach for another 3-5 years, but I do wonder how our fan base will react if we don’t reach a bowl by the second or third year.
I think we should all hold hands and hope this was not part of some huge PR stunt to satisfy donors and increase season ticket sales…..
Christ, Wefald...
Effing discussion about Rhodes Scholars.
Shut up and talk football.
Panjandrum - November 24, 2008
Wefald just announced...
…that we have another student has won a Rhodes Scholarship. That’s awesome!
Now he’s talking about a professor who won a prestigious award last week (National Professor of the Year for nation’s doctoral universities).
Is he trying to deflect the attention from this?
TB - November 24, 2008
It's more like
don’t hate because at least we’re doing something right.
mystman995 - November 24, 2008
I'm proud of our Rhodes Scholars and all...
But Wefald’s voice is like nails on a chalkboard to me at this point.
Panjandrum - November 24, 2008
How many times does Wefald say...
“Have you heard of X?”
“Yeah, he’s doing pretty well.”
Panjandrum - November 24, 2008
Now he's talking about the great team of assistants we're going to assemble...
…Christ, now he’s quoting Bill McCartney! Fuck me.
TB - November 24, 2008
Wait, I missed that...
We’re hiring McCarney?
Panjandrum - November 24, 2008
No, he was quoting...
…Bill McCartney about what a great job Snyder did. Something from the mid-1990s.
TB - November 24, 2008
Look, Jon, we all know how good of a coach he was in his first stint. We’re not arguing that he’s not a good coach, we’re arguing that this is the right move for K-State.
TB - November 24, 2008
Oh because hiring
great assistants wasn’t important the last time?
mystman995 - November 24, 2008
Barry Switzer.
MadCat - November 24, 2008
I knew it...a reference to Paterno
And Reagan.
And McCain.
What about the crypt keeper, Wefald?
Panjandrum - November 24, 2008
Why does he keep talking about politicians?
TB - November 24, 2008
He sounds extremely miffed
Maybe he’s been reading this site.
TB - November 24, 2008
This is Ron Burgundy
Go fuck yourselves San Diego.
mystman995 - November 24, 2008
Good. I hope he does.
I can’t wait until you retire, John.
Take Bob with you.
Panjandrum - November 24, 2008
He's looking for another Landon Lecture speaker...
Consider it putting out feelers.
Panjandrum - November 24, 2008
He should become a politician.
MadCat - November 24, 2008
Yes, Jon, there is doubt
TB - November 24, 2008
Come on down!
You’re the next contestant on…
MadCat - November 24, 2008
"Let's see who can coach K-State football!"
TB - November 24, 2008
Why has it come to this?
Jon Wefald has done so much good, and now I’m in the position of being irritated by him.
Snyder did more for K-State than anyone, and now I’m forced to be unhappy that he’s back.
TB - November 24, 2008
Oh, God
Snyder just held a tape recorder up there and said, “What, just one of these now?”
Well, technology has improved…
Panjandrum - November 24, 2008
He's received training on how to 'text'.
MadCat - November 24, 2008
My God, he's pretty entertaining...
…he’s clearly been away a while and doesn’t have his “media hate” in full force.
TB - November 24, 2008
To his credit, he's jovial, likeable, and has a much better rapport with the media
Panjandrum - November 24, 2008
Well, never mind...
…now he’s scolding the media for printing this before the decision was made. Just like old times.
TB - November 24, 2008
I just heard that...
Oh, crap.
Panjandrum - November 24, 2008
Sources!!!!
You have foiled us again!
MadCat - November 24, 2008
I can see the blog post headlines tomorrow...
…Internet makes its way to Manhattan, introduced to Coach Snyder.
TB - November 24, 2008
Can Snyder be K-State's next president
Welfald makes me sick… (I’ve worked with him)
Deaner - November 24, 2008
he brought him the internet
Deaner - November 24, 2008
A youngster, by and large, brings me the Internet every day with my newspaper
Panjandrum - November 24, 2008
Audio Stream?
I can’t get a connection via KMAN – where are you listening from?
CPNE - November 24, 2008

MadCat - November 24, 2008

I'm on KStatesports.com
I’ve got a feed from Passport.
Panjandrum - November 24, 2008
That silly game of football.
MadCat - November 24, 2008
Any word of any future plans yet?
There has to be a plan right?
mystman995 - November 24, 2008
Pffft...plans are for Princes.
MadCat - November 24, 2008
Notebooks have been replaced with legal pads...
Comforting, reassuring legal pads written on with a nice, Cross pen.
Panjandrum - November 24, 2008
We need stationery in here! Stat!!
MadCat - November 24, 2008
Not yet...
…he’s talking about how much he loves the people of K-State.
TB - November 24, 2008
You're looking at it, dude.
Panjandrum - November 24, 2008
oh no definitions of the Bill Snyder family again
is this going to be on the test
Deaner - November 24, 2008
Option D
“All of the above”
TB - November 24, 2008
T/F
Has Snyder done right by his family?
MadCat - November 24, 2008
Sorry, I guess that should not be in the form of a question.
MadCat - November 24, 2008
Anyone mentioned that he's making $1.8 million per year?
I wonder how those dudes who cut checks for Patterson feel?
Panjandrum - November 24, 2008
Budget cuts
I wonder how academic departments who have had their budget cut feel
Deaner - November 24, 2008
No, this didn't come from the academic side...
This came from the GP warchest.
At least, that’s what we’ve heard.
Panjandrum - November 24, 2008
I've heard the same thing
Deaner - November 24, 2008
How much did he make
during the last few years of his first reign?
mystman995 - November 24, 2008
I want to say $1.5 mil...
but don’t hold me to that.
Panjandrum - November 24, 2008
How does the family feel?
Deaner - November 24, 2008
Isn't Meredith...
…his daughter who was in the bad car accident back in the 1990s?
TB - November 24, 2008
I believe so...
Pretty inspirational story to be honest.
Panjandrum - November 24, 2008
For sure...
…I remember reading about that in SI back in 1998.
TB - November 24, 2008
Wow...
A Casey Stengel reference
Deaner - November 24, 2008
Nice tip of the hat to Ron
You have to hand it to Bill, dude’s all class.
Panjandrum - November 24, 2008
no doubt
Bill’s all class and, for the most part, so are his players
Deaner - November 24, 2008
No doubt about that
TB - November 24, 2008
So...
…he’s going to use his platform to talk about mentoring, or include his family, and all this other stuff.
TB - November 24, 2008
Eh, at least he's not taking up some celebrity cause like Bono.
Panjandrum - November 24, 2008
Question time
TB - November 24, 2008
At this particular point in time...
YES!!!!
Panjandrum - November 24, 2008
Oh, my
And the very first question, a reporter gets scolded. Just like the good old days. Bill is back!
TB - November 24, 2008
That was Bruce Heartl...
He’s on the pre-game show for crying out loud.
Panjandrum - November 24, 2008
I wish...
…I recognized the local media members’ voices like you do.
TB - November 24, 2008
Jeffrey Martin talking now?
MadCat - November 24, 2008
Yeah, that was J-Mart
I’ve actually met and talked to him. Really nice guy.
TB - November 24, 2008
And no plan in place for recruiting yet!
EVEN BETTER!
Panjandrum - November 24, 2008
WHAT!?!?
No plan in place?!?!
CPNE - November 24, 2008
He’s going it because:
…his family wanted him to do it
…the K-State family is in flux right now (he wants to unify the fans)
TB - November 24, 2008
J-Mart wants to know...
…when this was first offered to him.
He said a week or so ago. Apparently it was right after Ron had been released, the week after the KU game according to Snyder.
TB - November 24, 2008
Jeff Martin just asked a question about when he was approched...
And Martin was validated. Snyder was presented the opportunity the Thursday after the KU game.
Way to go guys! No coaching search!
Panjandrum - November 24, 2008
exactly what I was thinking
Deaner - November 24, 2008
Not impressed so far.
I wish he said he was doing it because he wanted to see tackling and games won. Not because he felt he was doing us “a square”.
CPNE - November 24, 2008
He's doing it because...
Wefald and Krause asked him to save their asses.
Panjandrum - November 24, 2008
exactly
Wefald needs to salvage his legacy
Deaner - November 24, 2008
he has a wonderful academic legacy...
He just screwed it up because he wanted to play AD.
Panjandrum - November 24, 2008
Asked about his first resignation being a "mistake"
He said he made a quick decision. I really, really wonder what was happening behind the scenes when he retired initially.
TB - November 24, 2008
Tim Weiser: Fire your coaches...
Bill Snyder: No.
Tim Weiser: Then you’ll be fired.
Bill Snyder: You can’t fire me. I quit.
Panjandrum - November 24, 2008
Yeah
TB - November 24, 2008
Wefald wasn't in the conversation
he was too busy kissing Rhodes Scholars’ a$$es
Deaner - November 24, 2008
Was that Kevin Haskin?
Asking him if he missed Saturdays or Sunday-Friday prep.
TB - November 24, 2008
I think it was Janssen
Panjandrum - November 24, 2008
Memo to students: Start looking at the snap clock...
Assist the QB by counting down. We’ll have at least 25 yards per game on delay of game penalties.
Snyder just assured us that those are coming back.
Panjandrum - November 24, 2008
Haha
I remember the groan of horror when Ell Roberson would start to check off with three seconds on the play clock.
TB - November 24, 2008
My roommate and I called it the Kavanaugh play (from '96)
MadCat - November 24, 2008
"IN" famous guys.
MadCat - November 24, 2008
Yeah, I wondered if that was a slip of the tongue or if he was trying to be funny.
TB - November 24, 2008
HUH?
mystman995 - November 24, 2008
He was talking about voting on the Legend's Poll...
…referred to the other legendary coaches as “infamous guys.”
TB - November 24, 2008
His place among the legends poll.
He called them infamous…made me think about the Three Amigos.
MadCat - November 24, 2008
I'll say this...
…he has apparently watched a lot of football the last few years.
TB - November 24, 2008
I so hope he doesn't reschedule our marquis matchups.
MadCat - November 24, 2008
I don't think we'll have the money to buy them out.
Panjandrum - November 24, 2008
I'm not going to lie...
The dude is, today, without a doubt the best coach in the North division.
Now, can he hire good assistants and recruit? That’s the question.
Dude is still sharp as a tack.
Panjandrum - November 24, 2008
Now he made a joke about non-con scheduling...
…saying we’re not going to go down and play any SEC teams.
TB - November 24, 2008
Running and defense
K-State needs to play SEC / Big 10 style football – running, ball control, and defense
Deaner - November 24, 2008
Yes, stop the bleeding...need less basketball scores.
MadCat - November 24, 2008
Whatever happened to the option
in the Big 12? It worked so well for so many teams
mystman995 - November 24, 2008
It works for me in video games!
MadCat - November 24, 2008
I'd never thought I'd say this, but...
…man I miss Ell Roberson
mystman995 - November 24, 2008
Yeah...
MadCat - November 24, 2008
I bet he brings it back...
You wait and see. He’ll take that opportunity to run something everyone else isn’t because it gives us a competitive advantage.
Panjandrum - November 24, 2008
Make it simple enough that anyone can do.
MadCat - November 24, 2008
Option football...
…so easy, a caveman can do it.
TB - November 24, 2008
Wait, wait...
Are you hear to save me money on car insurance?
MadCat - November 24, 2008
here not hear
MadCat - November 24, 2008
Option football...
….so easy, Allan Webb can do it……
mystman995 - November 24, 2008
Sort of
TB - November 24, 2008
No it's more like
The three step drop…
…so easy, Allan Webb can’t do it….
mystman995 - November 24, 2008
that's exactly what we need
a defense that can shut down high-scoring offenses and an offense that can keep the ball for long periods of time and beat up the defense
Deaner - November 24, 2008
Hell, I'll just take...
…a defense that is lined up properly and at least occasionally slows down the opposition.
TB - November 24, 2008
good call
baby steps…
Deaner - November 24, 2008
recruiting
We can’t recruit the same offensive skill players as Texas, Oklahoma, etc.
Deaner - November 24, 2008
Wow, that was a dumb question by the reporter. Asking Snyder to criticize what went wrong with the team the last few years.
TB - November 24, 2008
At least he didn't throw Prince under the bus.
MadCat - November 24, 2008
Snyder would never do that
Panjandrum - November 24, 2008
He's not Bob Krause
MadCat - November 24, 2008
Just dropping in...
I’m listening, but unable to offer too many comments since I’m at work. Will throw in a recap later on. I agree with Pan though, he is hands down the best coach in the North right now. I just worry about the future of the program, especially since he has NO IDEA who his assistants will be.
EMAW - November 24, 2008
To be truthful, I'm just as interested to hear him pontificate and theorize on the issues of our society
as I am to hear him talk football.
He gets it.
Panjandrum - November 24, 2008
Let's hope...
…the time he has spent in the Kansas mentoring program helps him relate to “today’s young person.”
TB - November 24, 2008
The good side of the electronic world...
much better than the dark side.
MadCat - November 24, 2008
If anyone has "Leadership Lessons from Bill Snyder", give it a read if you haven't...
I just pulled it out of my cube. I’m going to re-read it this weekend.
Panjandrum - November 24, 2008
I might just have to do that...
I’ll put it on my wish list.
MadCat - November 24, 2008
Oooooh..
he can text message!
YES!!!!!
MadCat - November 24, 2008
Just as long as...
…he doesn’t pull a Kelvin Sampson.
TB - November 24, 2008
I just got a weird feeling
I remember listing to Bill’s retirement speech in Varney’s… and now this
Deaner - November 24, 2008
"listening" not "listing"
Deaner - November 24, 2008
Okay...now I can get back to work.
MadCat - November 24, 2008
Alright, folks...
…I gotta go run a few errands, then I’ll be back with a new post summarizing my thoughts on this.
TB - November 24, 2008
I feel more relaxed
It’s hard to be upset after hearing from Bill. It’s still not my first choice, but I trust him and I am looking forward to watching this process happen.
ksubailey - November 24, 2008
Quick thoughts
EMAW - November 24, 2008
Oops...
#2, I meant “last couple of years” not days…
EMAW - November 24, 2008
Maybe he just needed a sabbatical.
